Selling the house or moving house - you will have junk that you don't want to move to your next home.
Renting? If you are renting then its a great time to declutter and get ready for the end of lease inspection.
Selling? Many real estate agents recommend doing a tidy up in and around your home to prepare your property and improve the real estate value.
11 Handy tips to get rid of your junk (and save money)
- Stop shopping. Use up all the packaged and tinned food. Check expiry dates and dump old products.
- Walk around your house like a stranger. How does the house look? Is it inviting or are the rooms looking cramped and cluttered with junk and personal memorabilia? If you don’t like it, never have used it, it’s broken or “grown-out-of” then it’s time to get rid of it.
- Make a plan, decide a start date and take it step by step. Choose one room at a time and go through it. Ask friends and family if they want your junk (ie other persons treasure) Bag up your old things for the local charity shop. Make sure everything is clean and nice. The charity stores are paying huge money to dump the broken and dirty donations they have been given. Be nice to the volunteers, they have to sort through your items. Be wise too- if you are getting rid of these items because you don’t want them it may mean someone else doesn’t either! You can also ring them to collect large items in good condition. Here is a helpful list of charities.
- Try local selling methods- Gumtree, Social media -facebook pages for “Bid, buy Sells” and garage sales or carboot sales. Be prepared to sell quickly and cheaply.
- Choose a weekend for the drawers and cupboards. All those drawers in the kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom and laundry? Go through them quickly, and efficiently. A few boxes for charity, some black garbage bags and be ruthless. If you haven’t used it for a year – bag it for rubbish or box it to give away.
Kitchen – plastic containers which are broken or missing lids, cracked crockery or pots that have seen better days. Expired spices, flours and packets.
Bedrooms – socks without partners, clothes you have grown out of, daggy underwear. Broken toys, and shoes you kept because they were comfortable (in 2006)
Bathrooms – ends of shampoos, gels, colours, makeups and all those cheap complimentary hotel items. Linen cupboard Try ringing the local animal welfare association- they are always looking for old towels. (Make sure they are clean!) - Hire our FILL TO LEVEL SKIP BIN for all the junk you cannot sell or giveaway. If you could not sell or give it away chances are your junk is rubbish! Our bins come on a small truck and usually the driver can get them up into the garage, carport or close to the house. Load in all the junk through the door. A big hammer will break down shelving, cupboards and tables. Put the flat items, like tables or timber in first on the floor Load in the bulky stuff next -fridges, dish washers, washing machines, dryers, all the white goods and lounges, chairs, beds then pack up the small stuff in and around them. Mattresses can go right on the top – they are the only thing we don’t mind sticking out of the bin. (Unless you have received your bin via an on-line supplier – you will not be covered for extras)
- While you are loading the mini skipbin leave any decent stuff out next to the bin – add a “FREE” sign – you never know what treasure hunter will drive by and take your stuff. Saves you paying for it to be dumped and recycles resources! Winner. And if still no-one wants it – it’s easy to load into the skipbin at the last minute.
- On the 5th day – or earlier if you have finished – check the level markings on the back of the bin. That will tell you how much junk you had. Give us a ring and sort out the payment. You will only be paying for the volume of rubbish (the space you have used) – so pack that mini skipbin well! If you only used 2 cubic m then that’s what you pay for! (even if you have a 6 cubic m skip bin)
- Save money by hiring our skip bins out Monday to Monday. Usually our skip bin time frames are 5 days collected on the 6th day. But for the same price you can order for 8 days each Monday.
- Got tyres (or tires?) We need to charge a surcharge as they cost extra to dump. Give us a ring with the tyre sizes (motor bike, car, truck) and if they are on-rim or off rim. We will give you a price to dispose of them. We need the tyres to be placed on top of the bin for the driver to access easily at the dump depot.
- BCC Dump waste Vouchers. Let us know when booking for a $15 discount off your skip bin. The driver will collect the voucher sheet when dropping the skip bin off.
